Speaking on Tuesday at a prominent trial over the future of its developing metaverse firm, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is focused on developing communications apps and developer platforms.
Zuckerberg appeared in federal court in San Jose, California, to defend Meta's acquisition of virtual reality software developer Within, donning a blue suit, a white mask and spectacles.
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) representatives questioned him about an email he sent in 2015 in which he stated that he anticipated Meta to develop "most of the apps and software services" for the virtual reality sector.
The FTC sued the company that owns Facebook and Instagram in July to halt the transaction, claiming that it started its "campaign to conquer VR (virtual reality)" in 2014 when it bought VR gear maker Oculus. It claims that Meta is attempting to control the metaverse through the purchase of power.
As a full fitness service with beautiful destinations and workouts synchronised to the best music available, Supernatural was created by Within.
Due to its domination in a number of markets, Meta is engaged in a multifaceted, international conflict with authorities. On Monday, the European Commission announced that it had issued a warning to Meta, claiming that it was abusing its dominant position and distorting competition in online classified advertising in violation of EU antitrust laws.
