The Indian Premier League (IPL), one of the most sought-after flagship properties, generated a substantial 78 per cent year-over-year gain in revenue for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2023, reaching Rs 11,769 crore.
The Board's annual report states that new media rights deals were the main factor behind this. The Women's Premier League brought in an excess of Rs 377 crore for BCCI, even though revenue from media rights was Rs 8,744 crore, a 131 per cent increase from the previous year.
In the meantime, the 2023 IPL brought in an additional Rs 5,120 crore, up 116 per cent from the 2022 edition.
During the same period, the Board's total IPL spending increased by 66 per cent to Rs 6,648 crore.
Notably, Tata Sons defeated the Aditya Birla Group to secure the IPL title sponsorship rights, which are valued at around Rs 2,500 crore till 2028. Disney Star currently owns the IPL TV rights through 2027 for a sum of Rs 23,575 crore, while JioCinema is the owner of the digital rights for Rs 23,758 crore.
In total, BCCI's revenue jumped by 50 per cent to Rs 6,558 crore while its expenses rose by 70 per cent to Rs 2,831 crore.
