Rajeev Chandrashekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, said on Sunday that governments and internet forums have lagged behind in making rules for big technology players that can affect society negatively.
Chandrashekhar further stated at the Indian Governance Forum that the internet is increasingly viewed as a source of risk, harm, and criminal activity, despite its great potential.
He added that in terms of the dos and don'ts and the rule-making that is required, government and forums have lagged far behind the big tech platforms of the private sector.
According to the minister, rather than being treated as innovations, they were treated as innovators and innovations who could cause harm and disrupt society and people.Safety and trust are the most important areas for the government to address, especially when 1.2 billion Indians use the internet.
He also said that they need to address safety and trust online for the elderly, students, children, women, rural and urban areas, as well as government accountability. Several legal policy frameworks are being developed slowly and systemically by the government.
The minister cited the example of the intermediary rules, which underwent almost three and a half months of public consultation. Through consultations as well as the collaborative ecosystems around the internet, the government is bridging policies and building laws that are based on extensive consultations.
Alkesh Kumar Sharma, the Information Technology Secretary, said that the Digital India Program will enhance India's mission by providing digital literacy training and a world-class success story that is rooted in technological progress.
