The novel Corona virus hit hard on the entertainment industry. But what is life without some drama, isn’t it? The pandemic has taught us one definite thing- to enjoy each moment, especially with our loved ones. And open mics, live performances and standup comedy events propel the same promise.
With the unlock in effect, open mic events are slowly adapting to the new normal. Moreover, the present day scenario demands new protocols for shows to conduct, which all artists must adhere to.
In my experience, post the lockdown, footfall of the audience in live shows has plummeted. And, with new protocols in effect, many other changes have also been introduced to our set-ups and the way we carried out the different formats. However, we continue to live up to our promise- to spread joy in hard times, such as these. I anticipate a higher audience turnout very soon.
How has Covid-19 affected live events?
In good old days, people used to laugh without any inhibitions, sip coffee while enjoying the show and were accompanied by friends. Strangely, we only see sanitizers and masks giving them company to our events now.
From sanitization to temperature check to social distancing to mask distribution, everything needs to be tick marked before hosting any event. Furthermore, capping on the gathering is also affecting the business badly.
Not everything can be planned, especially in the case of open theatres. Limited space and a sudden change in weather can ruin everything. Maintaining social distance is a continuous errand. You need to keep reminding people to follow protocols. Space issues and lack of finances has resulted in many small theatres and clubs to shut down permanently.
Online events didn’t do the expected magic
During the lockdown, many comedians who made a living performing live were forced to move online. Sadly, only a few succeeded, forcing the rest to look for an alternative profession.
With all clubs and theatres for live shows down, interacting with the audience online was probably the only way to keep the conversation going. With YouTube videos being watched repeatedly, they were also becoming adaptively boring and viewers looked for newer content. Hence, a greater need for live comedy shows to be back in action.
Many artists observed that performing online did not attract a lot of eyeballs as opposed to them performing live. Also, online presence is great, but it lacks the chemistry, emotions and camaraderie that a live event offers. Which explains why open mic studios have resumed post the lockdown. Artists believe that it is always nice to see people join them online, but it brings greater joy to see them singing & enjoying in front of you!
From the audience perspective, nesting allowed people across the country to explore everything they need on the internet, especially the comedy genre. Needless to say, it did lack the excitement and joy that a live performance proffers.
With open mic studios back in the game, we are hopeful of a great turnout within the government guidelines. Even for most of the comedians who just started, live events will provide great exposure and platform to showcase their talent.
Cheery times awaited
What is an artist without its audience? Without the sound of laughter? Without the emotions? A nobody.
Nothing is more comforting than ‘speaking your heart out’. Seeing other people enjoy listening to your jokes, feeling your poetry and getting inspired by your journey, is as exciting as sharing things to your best friend. It always makes you happy. All it takes is a welcoming platform, an energetic audience and an awesome plot.
We hope to witness a house full of laughter, just like the earlier times!
