Meta Faces Employee Outrage Over LGBTQ+ Moderation Policy Shift

Policy allowing LGBTQ+ identities to be linked with "mental illness" sparks internal backlash and external criticism

Meta Platforms is under fire from employees and advocacy groups after altering its content moderation policies to allow the association of LGBTQ+ identities with ‘mental illness.’ The controversial policy shift, aimed at promoting ‘free expression,’ has drawn criticism for enabling potential hate speech and undermining protections for marginalised communities.

The policy change, announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has sparked outrage within the company. According to a 404media report, leaked internal discussions reveal widespread dissatisfaction among employees, who have described the move as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘appalling.’ Critics argue the policy contradicts scientific consensus and creates a hostile environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Some LGBTQ+ employees have reportedly taken time off or are considering resigning, citing a lack of support from Meta's leadership. The absence of internal consultations or expert input in formulating the policy has further exacerbated tensions.

External analysts suggest the decision may be a strategic move to attract conservative users, including those aligned with figures like Donald Trump, amid increasing competition among social media platforms. However, employees and advocacy groups warn the relaxed moderation could fuel hate speech, particularly against marginalised groups, damaging Meta’s reputation and user trust.

Meta has not addressed employee concerns or provided a detailed rationale for the policy shift. The situation raises critical questions about balancing free expression with the need to protect vulnerable communities from harm, a challenge many tech platforms continue to grapple with in a politically polarized landscape.
