In an apparent reverse of its 2019 global prohibition on political advertisements, Elon Musk-owned Twitter announced on Tuesday that it would allow more sorts of political advertisements on the social media site.
The company said in a tweet that it will relax its ban on "cause-based commercials" in the United States and that moving ahead, it would align its advertising standards "with those of TV and other media sources."
After Facebook and other social media platforms received harsh criticism for allowing election misinformation to flow throughout their services, including Twitter, they both prohibited political advertisements in 2019. Additionally, it prohibited ads for social purposes.
The announcement of the change was made via a tweet from Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, who stated that they think political message reach should be earned, not bought.
Corporate advertisers have abandoned Twitter since Musk took over in late October as a result of the Tesla CEO laying off thousands of workers.
Last month, Musk defended his deep cost-cutting measures, and said Twitter had been facing "negative cash flow" of USD three billion next year.
