Saregama India, part of RP Sanjiv Goenka Group is in talks to acquire a majority stake in Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. However, the deal is still in preliminary stages and may not materialise, according to media reports.
The increasing unpredictability of box office performance, shrinking dependence on satellite and digital rights and rising star fees have posed challenges for independent production houses like Dharma.
Dharma's recent projects include Kill, Bad Newz, Yodha and Mr & Mrs Mahi, with Jigra, starring Alia Bhatt releasing this week. On 24 September, Johar voiced concerns over escalating actor fees, revealing that some stars demanded Rs 40 crore for Kill, equal to the film's total budget.
Dharma has been actively seeking investments and engaging with several large conglomerates and industrialists.
Meanwhile, Saregama, which recently acquired a majority stake in digital entertainment firm Pocket Aces Pictures aims to strengthen its content portfolio and expand its film library.
