As per the recent developments, Facebook India and Google India representatives are to appear before the Shashi Tharoor helmed Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology (IT) on 29th June, 4 pm onwards, in Delhi.
The tech giants will present their case on the subject of 'Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space'.
The next sitting, scheduled for July 6, will see representatives of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) present evidence on the subject 'Safeguarding citizens’ rights and prevention of misuse of social/online news media platforms including special emphasis on women security in the digital space'.
Recently, the IT committee had summoned micro-blogging platform Twitter to give representation on how to prevent misuse of social media and online news.
The Central government had framed the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 ('new IT Rules') and notified the same on February 25, 2021. The Rules have come into effect from May 26, 2021.
