Even as we work with some of the best brands in the world, from the media, entertainment and telecom industries, I have had the privilege of seeing early experiments and deployments of AI into varied applications and workflows. This has allowed a first-hand view of the potential that AI represents in delivering speed, efficiency and quality in so many workflows and activities, and equally the risks of scaled deployment without guardrails, and the complex ethical considerations it brings up.
Here are four prominent themes that are cropping up in the media, entertainment and telecom industries with the increasing consideration and deployment of AI.
The Bias In AI And Its Media Implications
Bias in AI is a reflection of the biases inherent in the data it learns from – not very different from what a child learns from the environment around it. In the context of the media industry, the AI-enabled trend of automated news gathering and reporting, including the use of digitally created news anchors and hosts, can significantly influence which stories are chosen, how they are portrayed and how they are presented. The potential for AI to replicate and amplify biases poses a challenge to ensuring fair and balanced reporting. For instance, if an AI system learns from historical data that certain political viewpoints are more newsworthy, this could skew the coverage in favour of those perspectives. Addressing this requires a careful examination of the data and algorithms used in AI systems to mitigate inherent biases.
Transparency And Accountability
The core issue with AI in digital environments is its opaque black-box decision-making process – in the context of entertainment and media consumption, this can create uncertainty in subscribers and consumers about how it influences the content they see, from ads to news or search results. This leads to concerns about accountability and transparency. In media, where AI can influence content selection and presentation, understanding how these decisions are made is crucial. Ensuring the explainability of AI systems is not just about alleviating fears; it's about fostering an environment where AI's contributions to content curation are clear and justifiable. This transparency is vital for maintaining credibility and trust in media content influenced by AI.
Privacy And Security: The Foundation Of Trust
More and more consumers are concerned about the safety of their information in AI-powered platforms. In media and telecom businesses, the privacy and security of user data are paramount. These industries are central to how we communicate, entertain and stay informed and therefore potentially have access to very private data—from what we watch, to actual conversations and interactions over various messaging platforms. Ensuring privacy while leveraging AI for data processing is paramount. Thus, adopting robust data protection measures, such as encryption and secure storage, is crucial to safeguarding user privacy and maintaining trust.
Human-AI Collaboration: Augmenting, Not Replacing
The fear that AI threatens to replace human jobs is pervasive because of AI’s capability to automate tasks traditionally performed by humans.
A reference to the recent Writers Guild of America strike provides a stark example. This strike highlighted concerns over AI's role in the creative process, specifically its potential to replace human scriptwriters, among other issues like compensation in the streaming era. The strike's resolution after months of negotiation reflects the ongoing debate on balancing technological advancement with job security and creative integrity. Similarly, concerns are rising over AI's capability to automate network and telecom operations, potentially resulting in job losses for operational teams in these sectors.
There will always be a human element in any workflow or a 'human in the loop'. Balancing the needs of humans and technology requires careful consideration. It's not about outright rejecting AI but rather finding a judicious balance where technology complements human effort and enhances speed, quality of service and experience. For instance, AI can assist in data analysis for investigative journalism, while human journalists provide narrative and ethical judgment. AI can help identify issues and propose fixes for complex network operations, but the age of complete autonomous networks is still some distance away, making human oversight and judgement indispensable.
Human-AI collaboration, rather than human-AI conflict, seems the best and the right way forward.
