Reliance Retail has officially entered the fast-growing quick commerce sector, setting up fierce competition with established players such as Blinkit (owned by Zomato), Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket. The retail giant launched its quick commerce services through JioMart in select areas of Navi Mumbai and Bengaluru last weekend, signalling its ambition to disrupt the segment. According to reports, Reliance will initially focus on selling grocery items through its network of 3,000 retail stores nationwide, with plans to expand into value fashion and small electronics like smartphones and laptops.
Nationwide Expansion And 15-Minute Deliveries
Reliance is planning an aggressive pan-India rollout, aiming to scale up its quick commerce operations by the end of this month. The company is promising delivery times of 10-15 minutes for most orders, leveraging its logistics subsidiary Grab, acquired previously, to manage timely deliveries. Unlike other quick commerce platforms that rely on dark stores or local warehouses, Reliance will use its existing retail infrastructure, including Reliance Digital and Trends outlets. However, analysts suggest that delivering within the promised 30-minute window might be challenging in congested urban areas during peak hours.
No Delivery Fees To Attract Consumers
In a bid to lure customers, Reliance has adopted a fee-free strategy, offering its quick commerce services without delivery, platform, or surge fees, irrespective of order size. This approach sets it apart from competitors like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and BigBasket, which charge additional fees for their services. Reliance is focusing on expanding its services to smaller cities and towns, where quick commerce is still in its infancy, allowing the company to gain an early advantage in these markets.
Extensive Product Range And Geographic Reach
Reliance’s quick commerce platform will link the company's extensive inventory, offering between 10,000-12,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs), a wider range than on competing platforms. The retailer aims to extend its service to 1,150 cities, covering 5,000 pin codes, which gives it a vast reach compared to rivals that are largely focused on metro cities.
As Reliance enters the quick commerce market with its vast infrastructure and consumer-friendly strategies, it is poised to become a formidable player, challenging existing operators and potentially reshaping the competitive landscape.
