As per media reports, X (formerly known as Twitter), has introduced new rules allowing explicit material on its site, but access will be restricted for individuals under 18 or those who choose not to opt-in.
This decision comes as social media platforms face increasing pressure to limit children's exposure to inappropriate content. Users sharing adult content on X are now required to adjust their settings so that their images and videos are hidden behind a content warning.
The system will identify and modify account preferences for users who do not properly label explicit content. X has implemented similar regulations to control the spread of violent content, aiming to reduce the proliferation of violent language or media.
Adolescents have reported encountering more adult content on X than on dedicated adult websites. Australia's online safety regulator has criticised Apple and Google for allowing X in their app stores despite its adult content.
X is currently involved in a legal dispute with the Australian eSafety Commissioner over handling violent material, specifically, tweets related to a stabbing incident in Sydney. The case is set to be heard in federal court in June.
X's new policy aligns with Apple's guidelines on user-created adult content. While efforts have been made to restrict access to inappropriate content, concerns remain about the platform's ability to prevent users from using virtual private network (VPN) connections to bypass these restrictions.
