Noel Tata Succeeds Ratan As Tata Trusts' Chairman: Report

Unanimous decision made to ensure continuity and harmony in leadership

Noel Tata was appointed as the chairman of Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of Tata Group, on 11 October, according to a media report. The decision comes following the passing of his half-brother Ratan Tata on October 9 at the age of 86.

The appointment was reportedly unanimous during a meeting held in Mumbai earlier in the day, the media report added.

Ratan Tata, who never married and had no children, did not name a successor at Tata Trusts. The decision to appoint Noel Tata was seen as reflecting Ratan Tata’s belief in "moving on," the media source added.

Corporate lawyer HP Ranina praised the choice, stating it was a positive move for the entire organisation, adding that the leadership transition would ensure "total continuity and harmony." He expressed confidence in the future of the Tata Group under Noel’s guidance.

R Gopalakrishnan, former board member of Tata Sons, echoed this sentiment, calling Noel a "very nice and sensible man" who will "do very well for the Trust." He highlighted Noel's business acumen, believing that his experience will add considerable value to Tata Trusts.

Since 2014, Noel Tata has served as chairman of Trent Ltd., the highly successful apparel retailer within the Tata conglomerate, whose shares have surged over 6,000 per cent in the past decade. He previously led Tata International Ltd. from 2010 to 2021, increasing its revenue from USD 500 million to over USD 3 billion.

Noel Tata also holds board positions in several key Tata Group companies, including Tata Steel Ltd. and Voltas Ltd. His children—Maya, Neville, and Leah—are trustees of some family-linked charities, further solidifying the Tata legacy in philanthropy.
