Noel Tata Joins Tata Sons Board As A Representative Of Tata Trusts

This is the first time since 2011 that a member of the Tata family holds a seat on both the Tata Sons and Tata Trusts boards

Noel Tata has officially joined the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, as a representative of Tata Trusts. This appointment, confirmed via an online resolution during a virtual Tata Sons meeting held on the eve of Diwali, follows his recent succession to the chairmanship of Tata Trusts after the passing of Ratan Tata last month.

This marks a significant moment, as it is the first time since 2011 that a member of the Tata family holds a seat on both the Tata Sons and Tata Trusts boards. Tata Trusts, which owns a 66 per cent stake in Tata Sons, now has Noel Tata actively involved in its governance. In addition to this new role, Noel Tata also serves on the boards of Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.

Joining him on the Tata Sons board are Venu Srinivasan, chairman emeritus of TVS, and Vijay Singh, a former bureaucrat from the Ministry of Defence, both of whom also represent Tata Trusts. Together with Mehli Mistry, they form the executive committee overseeing Tata Trusts’ operations.

The Tata Sons board now comprises nine members, including chairman N Chandrasekaran and three non-executive directors: Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, and Vijay Singh. The board previously amended its governance articles in 2022 to prevent a single individual from holding the chairmanship of both Tata Sons and Tata Trusts simultaneously, a dual role once held by Ratan Tata.

Noel Tata’s leadership within the Tata Group has been pivotal. As chairman of Trent since 2014, he has driven a remarkable 430 per cent increase in the retail division’s revenue, reaching ₹12,375 crore by FY24. Similarly, under his leadership as chairman of Voltas since 2017, the company’s revenue has doubled to ₹12,481 crore.
