Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram issued a clarification regarding its advertising policy for alcohol and real money gambling which generated a wave of concern among various stakeholders.
Meta initially revealed plans to allow businesses in India, APAC and LATAM to advertise alcohol and gambling products on its platforms starting August 27.
However, Meta has now released an official statement to address the confusion. A Meta spokesperson said, “When we set business policies for our service, we respect local laws and therefore certain business messaging or other types of communication are not going to be allowed in certain countries, including India. The referenced communication lacked that precision that is reflected in our formal policies and documents.”
The clarification suggests that Meta's advertising policies will continue to adhere to local regulations, potentially limiting or prohibiting alcohol and gambling ads in countries where such promotions are restricted or banned.
