Byju's and MPL Sports, which are two of the major sponsors of the Indian cricket team, announced that they would be ending their sponsorship deals with the BCCI.
With an estimated USD 35 million sponsorship deal, Byju's had extended its jersey sponsorship till November 2023. The BCCI has requested Byju's to extend its contract with BCCI until March 2023 despite its wish to end the agreement.
On 4 November 2022, Byju's sent BCCI an email asking for the association to be dissolved following the recently finished T20 World Cup. According to their conversations with Byju's, they have requested them to maintain the current arrangement and the collaboration at least through 31 March 2023, according to a BCCI note on the subject.
On Wednesday, the issue was addressed during the BCCI Apex Council meeting. In 2019 the company had taken Oppo's place. Additionally, Byju's also sponsored the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
MPL wishes to transfer the kit and merchandise rights to Kewal Kiran Clothing Limit (KKCL).
The team's clothing and merchandising sponsor had requested BCCI to fully transfer its rights to KKCL. The current agreement is in effect until 31 December 2023. Nike was replaced by MPL in November 2020.
The BCCI said in a note that they have urged MPL Sports to either maintain the affiliation at least till 31 March 2023, or seek out a partial assignment that would just cover the right chest logo and exclude the kit manufacturing contract.
